The cage is a criminal noir much sui generis. There is a crime, even a double murder, there is a culprit already tried and convicted in 1954. But when Alberto Sartini, a man of sixty-year-old retired back home in Treviso where he lived his first nine years of life, the characters of the story begin to penetrate far into his mind, asking him to finally resolve many of the yellow years earlier. The plans then temporal overlap and mingle, as well as the social scene in the Northeast predominantly agricultural and poor in those years with the current one of the famous miracle. Alberto finds its roots, an old friend, her mother and sister, and above all meets Valentina, the daughter of that Carlo Bettini jailed innocent 55 years ago, and his mother, the exuberant Eva, wife of Charles. Together with them, painfully recounts the time dominated by hypocrisy, by-settling personal needs caused by the ostentation and mock decorum.
There are many people who act in this novel, characters of yesterday and today, by Dotto Borghetto the fascist infamy, by Catherine the crazy to the mysterious Maria la Longa , which surround women and men of the village, children's playmates and school Alberto, the teacher Ferrara and many others in a choral aimed at turning the mosaic of a social context that belongs to the not so distant as it seems.
